Clock

A/N: When we were told to write a poem in class today I thought of this old clock that has just been sitting around in our basement for almost nine years. I think that the real meaning of the poem has to do with time and not wanting it to stop when you are young and then when you get older how you wish that it would stop just so that you could cherish the last little bit of time you're here. Please comment and give me feedback on what you think of it.

Waiting and Wishing

Watching and Listening
Listening and Watching

The Ticking and Chiming
The Chiming and Ticking

Of the old Grandfather clock.

Sitting silently
Silently sitting

Reading and Thinking
Thinking and Reading

While the clock works.

Turning and Placing
Placing and Turning

The pages of the book,
As time goes by

Placing and Turning
Turning and Placing

The pages of the book
When the old clock stops.

Silently sitting
Sitting silently

With the old Grandfather clock

Not Chiming and not Ticking
Not Ticking and not Chiming

Wishing and Waiting
Waiting and Wishing

For all to go back,
To the beginning

  1. That's so cool Maggie! I love the repetition of the two words in each part! Also, adding in the few parts where they were actual phrases was really good! Nice job!

  2. This is really neat, Maggie! I love how you switched the words around for repetition, and then broke it off creatively to add in some meaningful verses to relay the meaning. Awesome job!

  3. Nice work Maggie, you used a really cool way of repetition throughout the piece. Like Kelsey and Alaina said I also love the way you added meaningful verses in the poem. Nice work!

  4. This was soooo creative! I've never read a poem with that kind of formation. I like how in between each little area of switching the words around, you slipped in a line about the clock itself. Nice job!

  5. I totally agree with everyone else this was very unique! It totally was a surprise I wasn't expecting this. I honestly have seen nothing like this before. The repetition was fantastic and the switching words around was awesome. I hundred percent with what everyone else said. Really good nice job!

  6. I appreciated the device you used to bring this poem together. The repetition and meaning come together, and the reliability, the predictability of each couplet reflects the nature of a clock, of time itself. Well done.
